Friday, 18 July, 1941

E arly on Friday morning, before I continue to take Ogorzow’s confession, I resolve to bring in his wife. Already looking pale and embarrassed as she takes the seat in front of me, she bursts out crying upon seeing the skulls lined up on the table.

I quickly apologize and carefully move them into the black bag at my feet. I then allow her to pull herself together.

“Were those…?” she asks, blotting her tears with her palms.

“I am afraid so.”

She shakes her head, her face contorted in anguish. “I had no idea. And quite honestly, I am still in disbelief. If anything, Paul is a wonderful father. To do that is just … I just find it hard to believe it…”

“Yes, I understand. I sympathize with you, Mrs. Ogorzow.”

“Can you please call me Gertrude, Herr Lüdtke? Ever since I found out about what Paul did, I feel sick to my stomach whenever someone calls me by his name.”

“Of course.”

I look at this frail woman before me and marvel at her gentle manner and soft voice. Everything about her seems warm and kind and unaffected, and I again marvel at how such a human being could ever be associated with the other type of “human being”.

“Gertrude, if you don’t mind, I would like to know more about your husband.”

“Well, that makes two of us,” she says softly, placing her hands one on top of the other in her lap. “That is not my husband. At least not the man I married.” She sighs deeply and I see tears forming again in her eyes. “But, sure. I’ll tell you everything you need to know.”

“Anything you wish to say is of importance.”

“Well, Paul and I got married a little over three years ago. The first year was wonderful. I felt well looked after and much loved. He was kind, attentive, and romantic. But then all that changed.”

“Any reason you know of for that change?”

“He began drinking. He had these massive headaches because of his nose. He suffered an accident and his nose was improperly set. He always was prone to nasal infections. When I confronted him about his drinking, he said it alleviated his headaches. What else could I say?”

“How did his drinking affect you?”

“Well, he became violent. He was constantly jealous and started suspecting I was being unfaithful to him. But that was only in his head. It did not matter that he had no proof, or that I was pregnant with our son, then our daughter. If he thought it, then it was enough to become the truth. He started beating me. He would come home earlier to catch me in the act of… you know. I would laugh and he would beat me anyway.”

“I see. Your husband was involved in several hundred attacks on women. That certainly took a lot of time. And when you consider that he was a full-time employee, I imagine he often came home late. How would he justify his absences?”

“He always said he worked overtime.
